Pregnancy massage

Pregnancy massage is specifically tailored for the expectant mother’s needs. The difference from a regular massage is that the mother’s body must be properly positioned in an semi-reclining position and supported during the massage, using pillows and padding. This is not only really comfortable, but safe for you and your baby. Also, some massage techniques, such as deep tissue work or stimulation of certain pressure points cannot be used.Pregnancy massage has been found to reduce stress, decrease swelling in the arms and legs by increasing the blood and lymph circulation and relieve aches and pains in muscles and joints.

It’s a popular complementary therapy during pregnancy for back pain, when choices for pain relief, such as medication, are often limited.

Not only can massage be physically beneficial, but the human touch can be comforting and provide emotional support during pregnancy. Massage therapy has been found to reduce anxiety and depression.

Massage is beneficial for almost everyone. Even women carrying multiples babies can benefit greatly from massage. There may be certain conditions that may or may not be related to the pregnancy that would preclude massage or certain types of massage. This may include women at risk for pre term labour, women with blood clots or clotting disorders, and other ailments. For this reason I recommend that you make an appointment for massage only after the first trimester of your pregnancy and have a written notice from your doctor or midwife before receiving massage therapy during pregnancy.
